Smokey Bear

Only You Can Prevent Wildfires

Smokey Bear: A Symbol of Wildfire Prevention

Smokey Bear is the face of the longest-running public service advertising campaign in U.S. history. Since 1944, Smokey has been a national icon for wildfire prevention, delivering a timeless message that still rings true today: "Only You Can Prevent Wildfires.”

This powerful slogan reminds us that we all share the responsibility of protecting our lands, homes, and communities from wildfire.

Painter Rudy Wendelin, who grew up in Ludell, Kansas, and worked as an illustrator for the Forest Service in 1933, was the mastermind behind Smokey Bear’s human-like appearance—complete with ranger hat and blue jeans—and helped ensure his message, “Only YOU can prevent wildfires,” endured for generations.
